The "Te Kaahi Mataara" (properly spelled Te Kaahu Mataara) collar badge belongs to the 3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles Regiment of the New Zealand Territorial Force and First World War Expeditionary Force. Formed in 1911, the unit's distinctive insignia features a hawk on the alert holding traditional Māori weapons (taiaha and tewhatewha) with a Southern Cross shield on its breast.
