North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry Cap Badge. Silver
North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry Cap Badge. Marked 'SILVER' to the rear.
The "SILVER" Stamp: In the early 1900s, British military outfitters (such as J.R. Gaunt or Firmin) frequently stamped high-quality custom orders or officer dress pieces simply with "SILVER" or "P. SILVER" (Pure Silver) rather than sending individual, small-batch military items through a formal assay office for full hallmarking. Modern replicas, by contrast, almost always use standard contemporary stamps like "925".
Copper Lugs: Copper wire loops are the text-book mounting fixture for genuine Edwardian cap badges. Silver is too soft a metal to survive the constant tension of a cotter pin or cap-braid, so period silversmiths hard-soldered durable copper or brass wire loops onto the reverse of solid silver or silver-plated bodies.
